The Biblical Basis for Catholic Beliefs: Purgatory (12-17-10)
Even among Catholics there are many misconceptions about what Purgatory is and what it is not. In light of these misconceptions, a brief definition of Purgatory is in order. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches (1030) "All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of Heaven." (1031) The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned...
Without basic knowledge of the Greek language with which the Gospel of Matthew was written, the phrase “You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church” is easily misunderstood. The Gospel of Matthew was composed in Greek and the original Greek words used for “Peter” and “rock” in this passage are petros and petra respectively. “You are petros and on this petra I will build my Church.” The ancient Greek language with which Matthew composed his Gospel used different forms of the same noun to indicate a masculine or feminine word gender...
Succession refers to being a legitimate heir of, or successor to, someone who held an office previously. The legitimacy of the successor is dependent upon the authority under which the office is conferred. As an example, Ronald Reagan was the successor to Jimmy Carter in the office of President of the United States based on the legitimate authority of the Constitution of the United States. The office of President of the United States was conferred upon Ronald Reagan legitimately through the “Swearing in” or “Oath of Office” which can only be administered, as per the US Constitution, by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Apostolic Succession in the Catholic Church refers to the legitimate spiritual, ecclesiastical and sacramental authority, power, and responsibility held by the members of the office of Bishop...
The widespread acceptance and use of contraception in our society is the primary cause of creating the conditions which allow abortions to continue. Because contraception is the cause of abortion, we will never end abortion until we first end the use of contraception. Those who use contraception bear the brunt of the blame for creating the conditions which allow the culture of casual recreational sex and abortion to flourish...
There are over 25,000 Protestant denominations in existence today and it is estimated that four new denominations are formed every week. The diversity in denominational belief systems makes it hard to pin down Protestantism to specific doctrines or dogmas which are common to all. There are two doctrines however, having been formulated by Martin Luther, John Calvin and other progenitors of the Protestant reformation in the 1600’s, which can be said to central to the vast majority of Protestant denominations. These are sola scriptura and sola fide...
The Examination of Conscience is one of the fundamental means of furthering personal sanctification. For Catholics, the most common use of examination of conscience is in the preparation for confession. For all Christians, examination of conscience can be an effective means to greater holiness through fostering obedience to God and conformity to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. To that end, and through the application of an objective measurement of how well we conformed to the will of God, the examination of conscience helps us avoid the self‐deception of thinking that our behavior, thoughts, and motives are not sinful when they actually are, as well as avoiding scrupulosity, which is seeing sin where there is none. There are two basic types of examinations of conscience....
Protestants in general, and fundamentalist “Bible Christians” in particular, hold the view that the Bible is the sole source of religious truth and further, that its understanding must be found by only looking at the words of the text. This is the doctrine of sola scriptura, which states that no outside authority, such as the Church, has been established by Christ in order that scripture may be interpreted, that conclusions may be drawn from the text and that these conclusions may be used to help mankind understand God’s will with regards to matters of faith and morals. To the Protestant fundamentalist, scripture is the sole source (sola scriptura) of teaching on matters of faith and morals...

By default, Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 do not set limits on message size. In certain circumstances, an upgrade of an existing Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 organization to Exchange 2007 may unexpectedly leave you with a 10MB maximum message size throughout the entire organization. Now pay attention here because we are not only talking about messages that cross internet connectors. These limits may be global, affecting every message passed to and from all internal users, from the CEO down to the receptionist at the front desk. Suddenly having an entire organization switch from no message limits to a 10MB limit may not go over too well...
I love riding my bike. I also love reading about history. One of the reasons I moved to the area around Kennesaw Mountain was because of its rich Civil War history. In reading the memoirs of Generals Sherman, Johnston, Grant and other important works, I gained an insight into the actions leading up to the battles about Kennesaw Mountain during the Atlanta Campaign in Spring and Summer of 1864. As I began to explore the area and to visit view some of the sites that these now legendary figures had written about, I was pleasantly surprised to find that both the quantity and quality of sites of historical military significance far exceeded my expectations. Needless to say, I was delighted to find that I could access almost all of these sites by bike!
I rode in a club for a while with a woman who was a very good cyclist. She won most of the sprints on the Saturday morning club rides during the B rides. As the season progressed, she began riding with the B+/A groups and the following year, was riding regularly with the A riders. The year after, she was leading the AA “Early bird” rides and came in top 20 at the Empire State Games in New York State. I knew her work schedule and asked her how she found time to train. She said that it was not always about the amount of time but using that time wisely...
